My coffee smelled like an Amtrak train.  It still tasted delicious.  My scarf smelled like someone else.  It definitely looked like mine. Misperceptions can hold a seed of truth.

A minute of perfection was worth the effort. A moment was the most you could ever expect from perfection.

The Art of Letting Go

When you’ve been with someone for a number of months, there’s a certain understanding and acceptance to each other’s habits and behaviors, whether it’s good or bad. In any kind of relationship, we learn to navigate our ways through these oddities in order to co-exist. Organizations that thrive from using the various skills, characters in talents are the ones who know how to place each individuals where they would be most beneficial; it’s called good management.

Unfortunately, it’s also part of good management to look out for ‘ineffective members’ and evaluate his value to the team and organization. It is also part of good management to be able to make hard decisions that looks at the situation as a whole, and carry them out. In a country where the labour laws favor the employee more than an employee, it is very difficult to let someone go because of under performance. More common than not, they’re shoved to the side, put in uncomfortable situations that will, hopefully make them leave the organization on their own will. But there’s no telling how long this will last. Unfortunately, a lot of people does not mind earning their keep with no work. The less work they have to do, the better it is. Shame comes second when it comes to earning money.

So, we had to let someone go yesterday. It created a lot of reaction on the floor, but hopefully it will pass. It’s unfair! It’s hard to lose a job so suddenly. We’re sorry, but we can no longer jeopardize you bringing down the rest. The hardest part is yet to come. For him and for us.

This is one art I’d never hope to master.

I do not believe making money in order to consume goods is mankind’s sole purpose on this planet. If you’re wondering what I believe our purpose on this planet is, I’ll give you a hint…it has to do with creating and sharing.

The long sentence is how we begin to free ourselves from the machine-like world of bullet points and the inhumanity of ballot-box yeas or nays.

Pico Iyer, in a pleasant Los Angeles Times article noted by Schmudde, defending his use of “…longer and longer sentences as a small protest against —and attempt to rescue any readers I might have from— the bombardment of the moment.”

Iyer chooses two sorts of reduced expression as examples: bullet points, which are the prose of the business world; and the “inhuman” ballot-box, where political expression occurs. It is amusing to note that many believe that it is in precisely these spaces —the professional and the political— that their identity resides, that the substance of their life resides. If not there, after all, where?

Day 2, 2012

People make New Year’s Resolution(s), come up with lists to remember the best or worst of anything, and wish for a better, faster, bigger, everything in the coming year. Oh,… my apology the year is not ‘coming’, it’s already here. 2011 went through so quickly that I didn’t really had a chance to ‘document’ what I liked, or hated for the most part. I used to be better at that, but then again I used to be better with lots of things.

If this post was a video recording, you would’ve known that I paused for about 10 minutes trying to remember highlights of 2011. Nothing came to mind, except that I consumed alcohol on a more regular basis and we all know how alcohol kills the brain cells. With that in mind, one of my resolution for 2012 is to be a better documentarian. Life is full of many lessons and moments, and there’ll be more effort in trying to engrave it to memory.
